The Design

“A celebration of stranded colorwork.”

Roughly translated from Shetlandic, Yöl Moorie means ‘yuletime blizzard!’ And it’s just the sort of stout, woolly hat we’d love to be wearing out in the snow—or the project we’d love to knit, tucked up indoors as the snow falls. Designed by Gudrun Johnston of Simply Shetland, this pattern draws on her beautiful sense of the Shetland landscape, using traditional stranded colorwork motifs.

The Yöl Moorie Holiday Hat is knit in five colors of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift. A fingering-weight, woolen-spun yarn made from the fleece of wee, hardy Shetland sheep. Nice and lofty, it has the perfect toothy texture and a gorgeous color palette.

5 skeins Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift (115 yds/105m each) in 5 different colors - 429, 268, 556, 179, and 235.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
US 4 (3.5mm) 16"/40cm circular and double-points, or size to obtain gauge.
US 2 (2.75mm) 16"/40cm circular, or 2 sizes smaller than gauge size.
Stitch markers.
11"/30cm dinner plate for finishing.
Darning needle to finish.

GAUGE
27 sts/32 rows = 4 inches in Fair Isle pattern, using gauge needle.
